First-time Brazilian wax: advice from a local expert with over 10 years of experience

How to make your first Brazilian wax more comfortable, with practical advice on preparation, hair length, sensitivity, and aftercare.

First-time Brazilian wax customers are usually concerned about whether the treatment will be too painful, which method works best for their skin, and how to prepare for their first appointment.

In this article, we answer these questions and share practical tips for a first-time Brazilian wax appointment. Generally speaking, Brazilian waxing is not too different from hair removal on other parts of the body and does not require complicated preparation. At Bare Care in Auckland, this is one of the treatments we perform most often, so these recommendations come from real day-to-day experience.

The short answer is simple: arrive fresh and clean, with the right hair length: about 5-7 mm, or usually no less than 3-4 weeks after your last shave or hair removal treatment.

How to prepare for your first Brazilian wax and make it more comfortable

Usually, first-time Brazilian waxing feels more sensitive. Part of that is mental, but extra sensitivity can also come from stronger hair growth. Following sessions are usually much easier, especially when Brazilian wax appointments are done at regular intervals.

Interestingly, the Brazilian and bikini area is not always the most sensitive waxing zone. Full leg waxing can feel more challenging for many clients because of the larger area and stronger hair. The bikini area, on the other hand, is smaller and quicker to finish.

Our suggested tricks to make the first Brazilian waxing more comfortable:

  • Do not apply skincare products within 24 hours before the appointment. Oily or heavily moisturised skin may increase the stickiness of the wax and make the session less comfortable.
  • Trust the bikini area to a professional if you have never done it before. An experienced specialist will make the treatment smoother and help the result last longer.
  • If you want to start sugaring at home, begin with easier areas such as the legs first. Incorrect technique can cause irritation and may contribute to ingrown hairs after waxing.

Which hair removal method works best for a first-time Brazilian and bikini wax?

As the founder of Bare Care, and with more than 25 years of personal experience using shaving, hot waxing, DIY wax strips, epilators, depilatory creams, hair removal laser and sugaring, I strongly recommend the sugaring method. I have provided this service at Bare Care since 2015.

Sugaring is one of the gentlest hair removal methods and is kind to the skin. It removes hair effectively, even in deeper bikini areas, and may help slow visible regrowth over time. I personally chose sugaring because it is the method that gives the most consistent clean result. What to expect if you feel nervous before your first Brazilian wax

It is very common to feel this way. We often suggest thinking about it like a doctor’s visit, and that helps many people. First-time Brazilian wax customers usually only feel awkward for the first few minutes before relaxing into the treatment. Future appointments are normally much easier, and the initial awkwardness quickly fades. If you want a broader overview for new clients, you can also read our first-time sugar waxing guide.

What to expect after your first Brazilian wax if you have sensitive skin

Shaving is one of the most ineffective ways of managing unwanted hair. This is especially the case for the bikini area where the skin is covered by underwear for most of the day.

Sugaring mainly grips the hair and only lightly adheres to the skin, so it usually causes less irritation than many other hair removal methods. Some redness may appear right after a session, but it normally settles quickly. Following proper sugar waxing aftercare is an important part of getting the best result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about sugar waxing

Will the Brazilian wax treatment stop hair regrowth?
Sugaring may help slow down regrowth and make hair lighter and finer over time, but it does not stop hair growth completely. Regrowth patterns vary from person to person. Some people notice a difference after the first session, while others need a few appointments.
What does Brazilian include?
Simply put, a Brazilian wax means removing hair from everything under the underwear line, including deeper inside, the buttocks, and in between. You can always choose to extend the treatment or leave some areas untouched.
How long should the hair be?
For the first appointment, hair should be at least 7 mm long. If it is too long, we can trim it to the desired length during your visit at no extra charge.
When is the ideal time to stop shaving?

On average, it takes approximately 3 weeks for all hair to reach the ideal length for Brazilian waxing. The reason for such a long period is the uneven regrowth pattern of hair.

Hair does not all grow at the same rate. Some hairs may be ready for sugaring a week after shaving, while others may stay in the “sleeping” stage and start growing after 1-2 weeks. So, 3 weeks of growth is a safe period for the cleanest first-time Brazilian wax.

Is it ok to do Brazilian wax during menstruation?
The common practice is to use tampons during these days. A period does not usually affect the waxing session itself, but we have found that 2-3 days before a period starts may cause some extra sensitivity during Brazilian waxing.
How often do I need to do Brazilian wax?
The optimal time, on average, is between 5 weeks to 2 months. This interval between sessions usually gives the cleanest result and may help reduce noticeable regrowth over time.
Can a Brazilian wax treatment be done on all body types?
Yes, body size and shape should not have any effect on whether this treatment can be done.
Does the initial appointment for a Brazilian cost more?
Not at Bare Care. In fact, first-time waxing, or waxing after a break of several months, requires extra effort, but we do not apply any extra charges under any circumstances.
Are there any side effects to Brazilian wax?
If you do Brazilian waxing with true sugaring, there should not usually be any major side effects beyond short-term sensitivity or minor redness, which may last from half an hour to a few hours. Sugar wax made only from sugar requires only gentle heating. It is a safe and natural hair removal method. However, the skin will still need proper aftercare, especially after Brazilian waxing.
Why choose Bare Care in general?
Bare Care focuses on four things: clean results, a welcoming experience, professional skill, and true sugaring.
