First-time Brazilian wax customers are usually concerned about whether the treatment will be too painful, which method works best for their skin, and how to prepare for their first appointment.
In this article, we answer these questions and share practical tips for a first-time Brazilian wax appointment. Generally speaking, Brazilian waxing is not too different from hair removal on other parts of the body and does not require complicated preparation. At Bare Care in Auckland, this is one of the treatments we perform most often, so these recommendations come from real day-to-day experience.
The short answer is simple: arrive fresh and clean, with the right hair length: about 5-7 mm, or usually no less than 3-4 weeks after your last shave or hair removal treatment.

How to prepare for your first Brazilian wax and make it more comfortable
Usually, first-time Brazilian waxing feels more sensitive. Part of that is mental, but extra sensitivity can also come from stronger hair growth. Following sessions are usually much easier, especially when Brazilian wax appointments are done at regular intervals.
Interestingly, the Brazilian and bikini area is not always the most sensitive waxing zone. Full leg waxing can feel more challenging for many clients because of the larger area and stronger hair. The bikini area, on the other hand, is smaller and quicker to finish.
Our suggested tricks to make the first Brazilian waxing more comfortable:
- Do not apply skincare products within 24 hours before the appointment. Oily or heavily moisturised skin may increase the stickiness of the wax and make the session less comfortable.
- Trust the bikini area to a professional if you have never done it before. An experienced specialist will make the treatment smoother and help the result last longer.
- If you want to start sugaring at home, begin with easier areas such as the legs first. Incorrect technique can cause irritation and may contribute to ingrown hairs after waxing.

Which hair removal method works best for a first-time Brazilian and bikini wax?
As the founder of Bare Care, and with more than 25 years of personal experience using shaving, hot waxing, DIY wax strips, epilators, depilatory creams, hair removal laser and sugaring, I strongly recommend the sugaring method. I have provided this service at Bare Care since 2015.
Sugaring is one of the gentlest hair removal methods and is kind to the skin. It removes hair effectively, even in deeper bikini areas, and may help slow visible regrowth over time. I personally chose sugaring because it is the method that gives the most consistent clean result. What to expect if you feel nervous before your first Brazilian wax
It is very common to feel this way. We often suggest thinking about it like a doctor’s visit, and that helps many people. First-time Brazilian wax customers usually only feel awkward for the first few minutes before relaxing into the treatment. Future appointments are normally much easier, and the initial awkwardness quickly fades. If you want a broader overview for new clients, you can also read our first-time sugar waxing guide.
What to expect after your first Brazilian wax if you have sensitive skin
Shaving is one of the most ineffective ways of managing unwanted hair. This is especially the case for the bikini area where the skin is covered by underwear for most of the day.
Sugaring mainly grips the hair and only lightly adheres to the skin, so it usually causes less irritation than many other hair removal methods. Some redness may appear right after a session, but it normally settles quickly. Following proper sugar waxing aftercare is an important part of getting the best result.
