First-time sugar waxing: how to prepare for the best result

How to prepare for your first sugar waxing session for the best result, including hair length, skin preparation, comfort tips, and what to expect.

Your first visit

Your first visit — or even your first ever waxing — can make you feel worried and nervous. Some people tend to feel a bit self-conscious about their bodies. It’s completely normal to feel shy in situations where you’re being seen or examined. Try to think of it the same way you would when visiting a doctor: nobody is judging you.

I always do my best to make the appointment comfortable and welcoming so you don’t feel awkward. Some of my female clients have expressed concerns about their intimate areas, and I completely understand — you want to feel safe. I can assure you that I never pay attention to anything except the skin. I am so focused on the treatment that I don’t notice anything else.

DO:
✅ Check the hair length. The longer, the better. Please do not trim the hair if it feels too long.
✅ Keep the skin clean. Please do not apply creams, moisturisers, oils, or other cosmetic products before the session, as they can affect how the sugar wax works.

For 3 hours before sugaring, avoid exercise, swimming, or other activities that may leave the skin hot, wet, or sweaty. This can increase the stickiness of the wax and make the session less comfortable.

How long should hair be before sugar waxing?

When you are getting ready for waxing, the first thing to check is hair length. Ideally, it should be about 1 cm or longer — longer hair is usually better for sugar waxing (there is no extra charge for overgrown hair, and I trim it for free if needed). If you shaved, trimmed, or used a hair removal cream last time, try to remember when that was. Hair never grows evenly, especially after shaving, trimming, or depilatory creams.

Why is this important? Hair does not grow evenly across the skin. It grows in batches at different times. For example, if the hair was shaved 2 weeks ago, one batch may have grown back to about 5 mm, while other hairs may only just be starting to come through and still be less than 0.5 mm long. In other words, after 2 weeks the skin may have a mix of longer and much shorter hairs. Long hair is not a problem, but shorter hairs have less grip surface and are harder to remove cleanly.

For the best result, it is better to wait at least 4 weeks after your last shave or waxing session. In that case, the result usually lasts much longer because most hairs can be removed from the root, and you can enjoy smooth skin for up to a month after sugaring.

If you can’t wait that long after shaving, trimming, or using a depilatory cream — for example, if you want hair removal for a holiday or a special event — don’t worry. I can still make the area clean and smooth; I may just need to tweeze a few shorter hairs at the end. In that situation, I cannot guarantee that the result will last as long, but it should still last longer than with traditional waxing. You may notice some pointy hairs appearing sooner. That is why leaving enough time between sessions is key to a longer-lasting result.

You’ve already checked the hair length. Now you need to know how to prepare your skin for a better waxing experience.

How to prepare your skin before sugar waxing

Two to three days before the procedure, exfoliate in the shower using exfoliating gloves and any body wash. Apply a bit of pressure to make sure the hairs are lifted above the skin and none are trapped underneath. This helps the sugar wax grab all the hairs, even those as short as 2–3 mm. This is one of the biggest advantages of sugar waxing — it can remove shorter hairs than traditional waxing.

Good exfoliation also helps reduce the risk of ingrown hairs after waxing.

You are welcome to moisturise your skin with water-based lotions. Please avoid body oils and body butters, as the wax will not adhere properly if the skin is too oily.

After your appointment, make sure you also follow proper sugar waxing aftercare to keep the skin calm and help prevent irritation.
