Sugar waxing is gentle, but aftercare still matters
Sugar waxing is one of the gentlest hair removal methods, but good aftercare is still important. For the best result, it is not enough to remove the hair properly. You also need to look after the skin in the days that follow.
The short version is simple: keep the skin clean for the first 3 days after waxing, then start regular exfoliation from day 4.

First few days after sugar waxing
Following the advice in the table below will help reduce the chance of irritation, bumps, infection, and ingrown hairs after waxing.
Not following these recommendations does not guarantee problems, but it is always better to stay on the safe side whenever possible.

Day 1-2 after waxing: keep the skin clean
Sugar wax does not leave a sticky residue behind, so I usually use wipes to clean the skin after waxing. To finish, I apply aloe vera lotion or gel to help soothe the treated area. You can also apply aloe vera gel again later in the day if the skin feels warm or sensitive.
Sugar waxing is gentle on the skin, and we keep high hygiene standards during treatment, but the hair is still removed from the root. That means the follicles stay temporarily open after the session, and the skin can be more sensitive for a while.
That is why it is important to keep the area clean and avoid unnecessary exposure to possible sources of irritation or infection, especially during the first few hours. You can take a shower straight after the procedure, but make sure the water is warm rather than hot.
It is also best to avoid physical exercise, the gym, or any activity that makes the skin hot and sweaty for the rest of the day. Please also stay away from swimming pools and open water immediately after sugaring to keep the freshly waxed skin safe.
Day 3 and after: exfoliation matters
From day 3 or 4 onward, you can begin exfoliating the skin during a warm shower to help prevent ingrown hairs and keep the result smooth.
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface and makes it easier for new hair to grow through the skin instead of getting trapped underneath. If the skin starts to feel itchy, it often means the hairs are beginning to regrow and need a little help coming through.
Apply a bit of pressure, but use common sense. Exfoliation should feel effective, not harsh or painful. If you make it part of your regular routine, it will help your skin stay clearer and may also make your next sugar waxing session easier.
You will need:
- exfoliating gloves
- your favourite body wash
How to exfoliate: During a warm shower, use an exfoliating glove with your regular body wash and make circular movements for about 2-3 minutes. Do not be too gentle, but do not scrub aggressively either.
TO DO
- ✅ Exfoliate 2-3 times per week.
- ✅ Continue moisturising daily with a water-based lotion.
- ✅ Moisturise the skin after exfoliating so it stays smooth and comfortable.
- ✅ Please do not hesitate to contact me if you experience irritation, bumps, or ingrown hairs.
DON’T:
- ❌ Do not squeeze irritation, bumps, or ingrown hairs yourself. That can make the hair more trapped and may cause bigger inflammation or infection.
- ❌ Do not over-exfoliate, as this can damage or over-sensitise the skin.
If you develop an ingrown hair, keep exfoliating and consider using an ingrown-hair solution with salicylic acid. One example is Nad’s Ingrow Solution. You can usually find this type of product in a pharmacy. Apply it after each shower to clean, dry skin and follow the instructions carefully.
